I had a ten-year-old 24-inch replacement monitor in my office, so I wanted to hook up a new Roku that I bought on sale. I first tried an HDMI to DVI cable and even though I had a display, I kept getting a message that HDCP was preventing video from being displayed. Since the monitor didn't have speakers, I bought a splitter that separates HDMI and audio signals so I can connect computer speakers for sound. I stopped getting the HDCP error but the screen was purple. Then I took this adapter and connected the VGA cable. Then everything worked! The color is a bit distorted, but the picture is clearer than I expected. Yes, it would probably be cheaper and easier to get a budget TV, but I was determined to get it working.
