I think for a fit person it would be better to hold on to, but as an older person with a slightly flabby biceps I had to squeeze it really hard to keep it in place. If I had to leave it for a while, I think it might be a little impractical. But for my needs it's ok. When I took my dogs to the dog park, I felt awkward carrying my keys, ID, and phone in my hand wearing shorts with no pockets while at the same time fighting with two large dogs who couldn't wait to meet their friends meeting. After dropping my phone a few times I tried this running bag - and it works great. I put everything I need in this little bag, and then sometimes I carry it around my shoulder or just wear it on a shoulder strap. Anyway if it falls I don't worry about my phone breaking as it's really well padded. It has a zipped security compartment and a velcro flap pocket that fits some phones (I have a Pixel XL and it fits perfectly, although I usually use a zipped pocket for my phone and everything). Velcro for the armband and phone pocket feels strong, not weak at all.
