I had major foot surgery and it saved my life before and after the surgery. Cool compresses may feel a little thin, but you shouldn't wear them for more than 20 minutes at a time. If I need extra cold, I have a large, heavy cold pack that I could use with it. I would wear this first, then wrap the other around the arch and sole of the foot, and then wrap and tie a pillowcase around the foot to secure everything in place. It was perfect for the surgery I had. I had a torn tendon and incision at the back of my lower calf, a calcaneus osteotomy, a broken big toe and another bone replacement, a few screws, a plate to hold the metatarsal together, and an arch incision in the foot. . It was the first ice pack to hit all the right spots. Just don't forget to walk with him on backpacks that will burst under the weight. At first I had a similar one but it only had 2 ice packs and they were beaded. Both cold packs were leaking within a few days. I prefer gel packs, the beads always seem to bleed on me. I also liked that you can hold it pretty tight for pressure, I think combined with the cold it helps with the pain.
