I usually use professional color and developer but the shade I needed was nowhere to be found where I get my color so I looked for something very similar. This John Frieda hair color in 4R (Dark Brown Red) seemed to be a good match. When I first pulled out the bottles, I was confused by the foam application and the squeeze bottle. It looked like there wouldn't be enough color to cover all my roots let alone my whole head of hair. But I kept going. I learned that there was plenty of product to cover my hair with some left over. The foam was a new experience but it wasn't messy and applied fine. No scent that I could tell. The color came out exactly as pictured on the box and my roots are half gray and resistant. There is a tube of conditioner in the box that isn't very impressive for my hair. My hair didn't feel as soft and silky as it usually does when I use my own deep conditioner but the color was spot on and the bathroom didn't look like I killed someone in there. I usually get color everywhere. This definitely is less messy. I will go back to using my usual salon color because my stylist said it was better for my hair but I will definitely use this brand again in a pinch. My hair looks good. The red is a true red, not orange or copper.
