I love this stool! If you click on the picture you will see that I didn't add the legs. I wanted the footrest to be a bit lower as my feet hurt if I hold them too high! The legs add about 3 inches to the ottoman so I checked the underside of the footstool for any hard or sharp edges and found nothing. I can move the footrest easily and safely. I put the legs in the storage compartment in case I want to add them later. The top of the lid does not slip off. I read reviews of where it was. For me the upper is quite heavy and I'm having a hard time handling it, so for now it's just the legs or feet that need to be tucked away. This is a beautiful, pristine wood that will brighten the look of your stool if you choose to use it. they just screw on. There is a disk at the bottom of the legs and I think it's easier to rearrange the ottoman and without moving the legs around! All of my furniture is mostly solid color so I chose the paisley pattern and I love it! This is a very good size. A photo of my legs shows that they are quite wide. And all colors are neutral. All the way there. There are 4 small posts on the underside of the top to hold the lid on the bottom. Great purchase, I am a happy buyer!
