Now that I have this setup it does exactly what I wanted it to do very well ie in a wired network environment it transfers all the MP3 files I have on my PC hard drive via my traditional two-channel audio system. It has a number of limitations: does not support Internet radio, except for a paid service, does not support various protected data formats. But it does what I bought it for very well: it allows me to enjoy my entire music collection through my home audio system in an organized, well-cataloged way. don't want to spend more money on one of the more advanced systems - it seems that customer reviews of all these media players remain rather mixed. So I decided to do something relatively simple and this little box does what I want at a reasonable price. (I used to use my iPod in a dock connected to my stereo. For the modest price of this Netgear player, I've now released an iPod that was previously connected to my stereo.) A few caveats: 1. I haven't even tried setting it up on the wireless network; I just hardwired it into a network port I installed in my living room. I've had a lot of frustrations in my house with wireless devices, so in the end I just gave up and ditched home network wiring while I did other electrical work around my house. I'm glad I bit the bullet - the wired network saved me a lot of time and effort. This Netgear product is just one example of what is very convenient when connected with a wire, but much more of a problem when connected wirelessly. Throw away the software CD that came with the hardware - don't install it! Instead, download new software and firmware from the Netgear website. At first I couldn't get it to work at all - the tech support advised me to uninstall the software provided, download the software update from their website and start over. This turned out to be more difficult than it looks as I had already created a song database for Netgear and needed to hunt down and kill that database file. It was a little difficult so I spent a few hours on it. anything to fix it. If I started with the new software hosted on the Netgear site I would do it all in 20 minutes.
