I have over 25 years of professional IT experience at the enterprise (large enterprise) level, specializing in Security, Data Center, Networking, Wireless Networking (Wi-Fi), Mobile Devices and Desktop Devices/Laptops, Deployment & Support ( ie I lead several IT departments of well-known companies). With more and more IoT things (lightbulbs and WiFi switches) I was looking for upgraded antennas to replace the small short ones in a high performance WiFi setup (4x4 MIMO, 802.11AC, expensive business class brand - had to buy adapters for these use antenna screw in). Before I swap out the short antennas, I walk around and take measurements with the Samsung S9 Plus, measuring the speed and wireless signal strength in various tricky places inside and outside of my home (2,000 square feet on a 6,000 square foot lot in California) . -- Tests repeated to ensure accuracy -- My internet service is 500 Mbps Frontier fiber; The Samsung S9+ at 3 feet has a maximum speed of around 275 Mbps. Here's what I found. (All testing was done on the 5GHz band; it's much cleaner (less noisy) and faster than 2.4GHz, but also has the weakest signal). Rice. 1, Original antennas: Worst position is outside, rear front corner, end of driveway: Poor signal (approx. -84 dBm) with 7.89 Mb downstream / 3.37 Mb downstream. Rice. 2, Techtoo 7Dbi Antennas: Same Worst Location - Outside, Rear Front Corner, Street End of Lane: Poor Signal (about -81/82dBm) - HUGE speed improvement - 28.8Mbps download (365% increase)/ 10.2 MB when downloading (300% increase). On Fig. #3 shows the strength of the wireless signal; The top 2 "hunt" lists are mine. In all of the locations I tested, the "strength" of the signal stayed the same or improved only slightly (1-3 dBi); not enough to be of any noteworthy importance. HOWEVER, the *signal quality* has improved significantly; Speeds were consistently 2-3x faster and the connection was stable (NOTE: I'm an IT professional, not an electrical engineer; these tests should be accurate and repeatable without being overdone).
