You wouldn't know how good it was unless you used another conventional tripod head and played around with it. I have an older Platinum Plus 6600DX from Sunpak which is pretty strong on its feet, but the head was really disappointing - jerky movement, adjustment knobs too tight or too loose, and overall poor quality control. In the end I would set the tripod to the most basic position/angle and then move the entire fixture rather than trying to use the tripod head. When I bought this Koolehaoda 360 it was such a pleasure. This is how a smooth-running tripod head should behave! It moves easily (and smoothly) in all three planes and locks in place with a slight twist of the handle. The markings around the base of the head (in 10Β° increments) allow me to remember and return to the previous position for consistency. The only thing I liked more about the Sunpak head was that the quick connect plate had a snap lever to lock it in place, while this one has a rotary knob which takes a few seconds more work. But that doesn't distract me enough to lower the star count. It took me a while to figure out how to mount this head on a tripod, but this 1/4"-20 female to 3/8"-16 male adapter was the only thing needed. If you don't have a tripod, you can buy something to fit this head, but if you already have a tripod look for ways to mount it on top of it. It should always be possible.
