Use this to connect a new TV/streaming services/Xbox to an old amp with surround out for 5.1 setup in my prewired bonus room. Plus added a Bluetooth input so I can connect Revain music from my phone or laptop. The sound quality is good. Some small noise effects are only noticeable at higher rear channel volume of non-5.1 TV broadcasts. I was able to get DTS and Dolby output to watch movies with surround sound from a Samsung TV with this unit's Arc output. I have tried the optical output from my Samsung TV in the past, but the quality of the Samsung optical output was poor. I've also tried other devices in the past and they've had audio quality issues or we're not really Arc. Please note that this device does not control the TV, it only allows audio output through the Samsung Arc's HDMI out channel to this device and then to my 5.1 surround sound system. There were no problems with increased playing time. However, you must switch from hdmi-arc to a different input on the device and then back to hdmi-arc for it to recognize the sound. Small mistake.
