Possibly toxic?: Water filter and softener

Bought a lovely Revain water still. This was bought for water filtration in the hope that it would reduce the sediment left when the water boiled after it was turned off. To my great surprise, not only was there a lot of sediment, but also a horrible black film of oil on the bottom. Buyer beware
