Surprisingly they are not universal. Most cars I've seen have 4 screw holes for front and rear number plates. My van does not have a front or rear license plate. It only has the top 2 holes. It is placed on top of the board and attached to the two bottom holes. You can't flip them or you won't be able to see the stickers on the panels. I secured mine with Extreme Outdoor Velcro. I thought about getting a nut and bolt combo that would fit the caps, but velcro was already in place. However, this may be an idea for the future. There are no instructions. You just have to figure out that the screw goes into the cap's "cup" and the cap snaps onto it. Yes, it's not difficult, but not immediately obvious. But in use they look very nice. Also, the red ribbon is visible from afar, which gives me exactly what I was looking for - a way to quickly pick my car in a very regular color in the parking lot!
