This is an elegant solution for hanging pictures and ensuring they don't fall off the hook in an earthquake. Definitely better than my usual remedy. I used to take these hooks and fold each one inwards at the top of the hook. Create an inverted hook to keep the wire from slipping out of the hook as everything shakes up and down. This wire slide and snap solution is more secure and does not add weight or compromise functionality in any way. See photos. The only downside is if you want to pick up a hanging painting, you have to catch the hook from behind and press the spring blade when you pull it up.
