Beautiful old pickup for light tonearms

I have Pioneer's DD PL-750 low mass tonearm and have been looking at Audio Technica's new VM95 carriage or the famous Nagaoka MP110 and have come across a calculation of the cartridge's resonant frequency for a given cartridge compliance and total effective mass. As I study more, I see the benefit of setting this frequency in the 7-12 Hz range, as many recommend. Back in the old days of the 1980s, when Shure and other manufacturers were making MM cartridges with "high compliance," meaning a low spring rate, it was profitable for turntable manufacturers to make ultra-lightweight tonearms. It turns out that mine including the headshell (with carbon composite structure and lightweight design) weighs around 6g and delivers 16Hz with the Nagaoka MP110, which at that number causes corresponding tracking problems or distortion at low frequencies in music. Much of Audio Technica's carriage is heavy (67g) and offers low sag, which fits perfectly with its own AT-LP120 model and others that offer mid-weight tonearms. Both of my turntables (Pioneer PL-750 and Project) come with lightweight tonearms that deliver above 13Hz with the AT or Nagaoka models. The Ortofon OM series was developed to perfectly meet these requirements. The pickup weighs 5g, but you can take out the weight of 2.5g With match number 25 I get 9Hz for the resonant frequency with OM10 for my turntable. It is likely that due to this sensitive nature, analog will gain popularity and people will find that their preferences are satisfied in a unique way. I don't find the OM10 to be as delicate and silky as my trusty old Shure M95ED, but it has more structure and depth which makes it more enjoyable to listen to. For $80 I would call it a steal.

Pros
  • Electronic music, DJ and karaoke
Cons
  • There are other interesting options.
