Review on πŸ”§ Tavy Thin Skin 8501 Glue with 007 Super Adhesive by Barbara Simmons

Easy to use with great results! (says a novice tiler)

I bought the Tavy Thin Skin System (glue and paper) to redo my kitchen floor and door in a rental apartment. I waited over a year after installing the tile with the Tavy system to see how it held up before writing this review. So far so good - you'd never know it wasn't installed on a tile backing. It's actually more of an overview of the whole system, not just the glue. The rental house was built in 1959 and is located in the basement. so there was no sagging or bouncing to deal with. The whole process is not that difficult, but it takes a lot of time. You should generally clean the underbody to ensure it is free of dirt, debris, grease, etc. I would recommend dry skimming all of the Tavy Thin skin paper before you start applying the glue to make sure you cut it to size. The great thing about thin leather is that since it's made of paper, you can cut it into any shape or size you want. And very little waste as you can assemble sections if you don't have the exact size you need. If only cutting tiles was as easy as cutting thin skin paper! After you have measured and cut the paper, Using a U-trowel, apply a thin coat of Tavy to the clean floor, working in small areas. . The glue is very tacky - apply just enough as much as you want (I worked with sections about 3" x 30" - the width of a thin leather roller). Then stick the Tavy Thin Skin paper onto the glue. Once you have covered the area to be lined with glue and paper and have started to dry you should spread a thin layer of thin setting mortar over the glue/paper with a straight trowel to create a 'concrete base'. Your hands will definitely get a load. You have to be a bit careful when applying the glue - it is VERY sticky and will not wash off clothes. If you put glue on any tools and don't wash it off, you may not be able to remove it before it begins to dry. (I kept the spatula in a bucket of warm water when not in use to keep it from drying out). And don't be overly generous with the application; I started running when I reached the last 6-8 square meters of my project. You'll need enough glue for the paper to stick, but it doesn't have to be thick. I used the glue last, but hardly ever. And my whole project was a little less than 100 square meters. ft. Overall I am very happy with the Tavy system and would use it again should the need arise. I've also used Tavy Tile Puck (love the stuff!) and Tavy Tile Spacers (more expensive than regular pads but they make it easier for beginners) and Tavy Tile Mallet (a great way to pinch any little lip). If I find any flaws in the future, I will update the review.
