. There are three tricks for this. First you need to mark the radius from the swingarm pivot to the axle and then "draw" an arc up to where it meets the fender or side cover. Make a small mark with a perm pen. This is where you clamp the cable after attaching the larger piece to the axle. Second, you need to get your rear wheel airborne to measure free sag. Third, you need to know the rear suspension travel for this bike. You want to set it up and "zero out" with the rear suspension. Put the bike back on the ground and then sit on it, fully equipped and in an upright position, barely touching the ground. Then carefully dismount and pick up the bike again. The distance between the brass mark and the base is the deflection. Roughly speaking, this should be about 1/3 of the total rear suspension travel unless otherwise specified on your bike. The specifications of your bike must show the total distance. In my case, the travel was 220mm and the target sag was around 75mm. The maker of my shock said it was a little over 85, but you get the picture.
