Hardened like cardboard overnight

The texture was interesting and a bit slippery when I first took it out of the container. Then I left it in a dry room overnight, and in the morning the fabric was hard as cardboard. It was so weird and made the whole rag very uncomfortable and difficult to use. I still don't understand why this happened.
