Review on Black Audio-Technica ATH-M50X Professional Grade Studio Monitor Headphones with Detachable Cable - Critically Acclaimed by Hideo Kawae ᠌

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Everything in the purchase suits, a very necessary product.

I would like to further clarify a few points: 1) If you like a warm, comfortable sound, then the M50x is not for you. Their sound is bright, hard, creepy. It is ideal for melodic, emotional music, for classical music. In this sense, these are simply great headphones. But they are unlikely to allow you to relax after work. 2) The M50x has a narrow, even compressed soundstage. On the one hand, it creates a feeling of such cozy closeness to the performers, as if you were sitting with them in the studio and being present during the recording. Personally, I love it very much. But if you like a wide, open, concert hall-like sound, then the M50x won't deliver. 3) In general, I would say that these are not audiophile headphones, but audiophile headphones. They best allow you to enjoy the music, and not the sound nuances. I would recommend audiophiles to look at other models.

Pros
  • 1) Incredible expressiveness of sound and a sense of closeness to the performers. 2) Good bass, not the most detailed, but deep. 3) Headphones reach their full potential when used with mobile devices, do not require an amplifier. 4) Ability to use interchangeable cables of different lengths. 5) Reliable, time-tested (inherited from the M50) design.
Cons
  • 1) Narrow sound stage. 2) Very strong high frequencies. It's good for sound engineers to hear recording defects, but at home, especially on old and live recordings, you will also hear all the defects, crackles. Some find the M50x's "tops" too aggressive and fatiguing. Be sure to listen before buying. 3) Sound detail is good, but not great. There are headphones that outperform the M50x in terms of detail and natural sound, even around their price point. 4) Ease of wearing, I would say, at an average level.
