Review on Wi-Fi Enabled Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark III Digital Camera by Guadalupe Culii

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Unfortunately not pluggable

I was very excited when I read the review of this camera because it was described as pluggable despite the APSC sensor. I have been using the Sony RX 100 and RX1 (currently RX 100 V and RX 1Rii) as everyday cameras for a number of years. The G1 X Mark III was compared to the RX 100 in the DP Review and I was hoping it would make an excellent replacement. I always have the RX 100 with me when I need a camera because it easily fits in a jacket, suit or trouser pocket. At Canon, that's not an option. At best, as other reviewers have pointed out, it fits comfortably in a jacket pocket. The Canon definitely takes better low light shots than the RX 100, despite the slower lens, but under ideal conditions I couldn't see much of a difference in quality between the two. The RX 1 is actually shorter and less wide than the Canon, despite being deeper. and heavier, but its images outperform Canon, as you'd expect with its full-frame sensor and Zeiss F2/35 lens. It's just as easy to wear around the neck as the Canon, and while the Canon offers a slightly wider perspective, the cropped Sony offers a better image at longer focal lengths than the Canon. When I'm touring and don't want to take my interchangeable lens camera with me I use my Sony RX 1 and when things get tight the RX 100 works better for me. I tried carrying the G1 X Mark III around for a week instead of the RX 100, but it just wasn't that comfortable. It's the perfect bridge between the two Sonys, but I didn't find it difficult to travel with either. However, the G1 X Mark III, while expensive, costs significantly less than two Sonys, so it seems like a lot in terms of value for money. And if I were taller and the pockets were bigger, I would definitely switch to Canon. It takes amazing pictures, is easy to handle and use, and has a great user interface.
