Good sound quality, lots of features, less range than advertised

I used this with a motorcycle helmet although I don't actually ride a motorcycle (I think more like a moped). However, when you put on a helmet it's difficult to hear someone speaking at a normal volume and I needed a way to communicate clearly with others. This FreedConn headset has an external unit that attaches to your helmet or with a clip. or double-sided tape. Inside your helmet are two earphones attached with Velcro - some helmets have a dedicated slot for these earphones with a corresponding cutout, others don't, as well as a wired microphone that attaches with Velcro inside the helmet near your mouth. , or a boom mic if you have a half helmet. I use this with a full face helmet and watched some random youtube videos to figure out how to install it but the only tricky part is taking the helmet liner off and on and hiding the cables. SOUND QUALITY The sound quality for voice communication is actually pretty good - the microphone picks up my voice clearly and I can hear others clearly. Again, I don't actually ride a motorbike so I can't comment on how it handles noise from a loud motorbike or wind noise, but at the low speeds I was riding I didn't hear any disturbing noises. The quality of the music is quite normal. To be honest, it can't compete with a headset designed for listening to music, but it's more than enough for background music while driving. FUNCTIONS AND CONTROLS It has many functions. In addition to an intercom that supports multi-brand pairing, it supports connection to phones and other devices for audio and also has an FM radio. Pairing with my phone was quick and easy. There are multiple buttons on this headset - you have a dial button, a dial button, and a power/intercom button. As a result, many operations overload the keys, and you end up with things like short presses vs. long presses, double presses, etc. that I find really confusing and hard to remember. However, the main functions are easily accessible. To control the phone on the dial there is a play/pause/call answer button. A quick turn of the knob clockwise or counter-clockwise skips to the previous/next track, and holding the knob towards adjusts the volume. You can turn the intercom on and off with the power button. Everything else I have to take from the manual. While this supports group intercom with up to 6 devices, I only had 2 devices (this one and the other) to test. It also supports music sharing; Although I got it to work once, I have too many steps to remember. In any case, this is not a feature I want to use. The controls can be operated with gloves. INTERCOM RANGE Unfortunately the Intercom range is not as good as advertised. I tested in probably the worst area for it, New York. The range specified by the manufacturer is for open country, so you might be able to get the range advertised in more rural areas, but in New York I got about 200 feet (60 m) or just under a city block before the intercom became too distorted to to use them. However, I believe you can always use your phone if you need more range. In comparison, the range far exceeds the range of a walkie-talkie in the same area (the range of a walkie-talkie can be 50ft, which is woefully inadequate for driving), so I think this token works quite well. BATTERY LIFE More testing needed, but a short 30 minute ride didn't change the battery percentage. OTHERS This comes with extra Velcro and an adapter to connect to a walkie-talkie. It uses a dedicated connector (similar to a micro-USB) for headphones and a microphone, so you can't use just any headset, but replacements seem to be available. Please note that FreedConn appears to be selling 2 different headsets as "KI Pro". I have both and see no difference other than the color of the box. CONCLUSION Considering the current price, features and sound quality I would say this is a good buy for a motorcycle helmet headset. I've never had this and it's quite refreshing to be able to speak in a helmet. The only complaint is the intercom range, but that's most likely due to the city's very harsh conditions. Overall I give 4/5 stars.
