Review on πŸ”§ Dewalt DCD791D2 Compact Li-Ion Brushless Drill by Fred Meeks

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Compact, powerful and handy

I bought this drill with some reservations. I have a full closet of 18v Dewalt tools that are starting to run out of batteries and I thought I could start using these 20v batteries and the DCA1820 cordless adapter that Dewalt came out to fix the extend the life of my old tools. So I wasn't sure how long I would be using another cordless drill to supplement the many I already have. In terms of performance, this drill is not that different from my other drills. It feels faster when pushed hard, but my old 3-speed drill bits applied enough force to burn or ruin most drill bits. What I like about the DCD791 is its compactness. That's almost half the length of my old 18 volt drill. It's almost as compact as my driver. I've also considered the larger DCD991 brushless drill, but the compact size of the DCD791 is such an advantage that I would prefer a compact drill unless I'm mixing grout or drilling very long holes. I recently used it to drill some sheet metal HVAC ductwork in tight spaces and it was great not having to use a right angle drill bit. Dewalt has built many good features into the DCD791. I love how bright the light is and it's great to have 3 settings. The drill has 2 speeds and while shifting between gears is a little rough, it's less fiddly than my other drills and I didn't have to rev the motor to get it to shift. There are rubber shock absorbers on the sides of the main part of the drill body to help if the drill falls. The lining is all metal and holds up well. The handle itself is thin, comfortable and easy to hold. This is my first brushless drill and I also like that it's less noisy and non-sparking. It comes with 2 DCB203 2ah batteries which have a "fuel gauge" to check battery life. The charge I received was DCB112. With all the features, the best thing about this drill is how compact and relatively light it is. But don't let that give you the impression that this isn't a powerful exercise. The DCD791 is great and I will have a hard time upgrading to larger drill bits if needed.
