I checked several products like this one before choosing it. Many reviewers complain about a lot of things. many of them were wrong. but the manufacturer is the one who cannot give the best instructions. First the battery compartment is right there, just push the little button on the left side of the black compartment and it will pop out. I didn't figure it out at first and I just undid four screws and took everything off because I read a reviewer who did just that. Try not to start the device with the corners open as this will lead to false readings, or if you do, close the corners and press the reset button which is located in the same "on" button, and press it for two seconds. For guys and gals who aren't that keen on angles, remember that 45 degrees in a miter saw is actually 90 degrees on this machine. 45 + 45 = 90. You make two 45 cuts and you get 90. and the device turns off after 2 minutes of inactivity. If you insert the battery with the CR2032 side up, it will not work. turn it around
