Review on Royal Golden Taklon Brushs Assorted by Morgan Gilmore

excellent for applying shellac

I am a beginner and hobbyist in wood finishing. I've read about using "gold taklon" brushes to apply shellac (on a used cabinet to mask the smell of cigarette smoke). Good news mostly, the 3 inch brush did an excellent job of applying the dewaxed shellac (Zinsser Seal Coat) which is very thin while the 1 inch brush had a narrow finish. It doesn't absorb much liquid, so only a small area is covered after each brush load. But overall he did a good job. Then I started to break down what I had done with the lambswool applicator for the second coat: The wool must be too aggressive as it removed the first coat of shellac and some of the original wood finish which I am trying to apply now. Repair. Finally, the brush on the inside of the top of the case didn't work because the shellac was too thin: it dripped and dripped, and the brush couldn't hold it. I don't blame the brush for not working upside down - the shellac is too thin. I ended up taking a pure cotton roll, dipping a large piece in shellac and applying it like this; maybe a cotton rag would have worked too, I don't know. However, the brushes worked well.

Cons
  • Wrinkled packaging
