Saved my sanity

I bought this mainly to help a friend digitize photos. Her mother had recently passed away, leaving her with seemingly innumerable scattered photos and albums. I committed to helping her and brought my flatbed scanner with me, unaware of the gravity of the task ahead. On the first day I took less than 100 photos this way for six hours and cleaned it - it was clearly not a working solution for the required print volume. I started looking for a scanner with a document. Feeder even before I left, and among the options I found, the Epson FF-640 stood out. I have read and viewed various reviews, but then I found one that mentioned the newer second generation FF-680W. It seemed like a significant upgrade. so i ordered it. For scanning most photos, the FF-680W is incredible. With my flatbed scanner, I had to manually place each photo on the scanner, tell my image editor to get the scanned image, wait for the scanner to generate a low-resolution preview, crop and rotate the image, check the image enhancement options, and then click " Scanningโ€ and wait for the slower, full-resolution scan to be transmitted. I then had to save the image using an image editor, give it a name, and set the format and image options. On the other hand, in the time it took my tablet, the FF-680W can probably scan and clean about 20 600dpi prints. Scanner to pre-scan and scan only one image. In fact, it took me three minutes to take an image and then edit an image with a tablet, all of which required tedious manual steps. When I first started scanning with the FF-680W, I used the option to save both the original scan and the enhanced version as separate files, but the enhancement results are so good that I no longer worry and save only the enhanced images. The only transmission error I've encountered was with a photo that was mounted in a heavy cardboard frame. I didn't think it would go through the scanner and put it aside, to be scanned with a flatbed, but curiosity got the better of me and I gave it a try anyway. If the paper path were more direct, a scanner could replace a flatbed scanner in many cases. I find the option to automatically scan the back of photos for handwritten notes useful, but it's overly sensitive. Some of the prints I scanned often just captured the "Kodak" watermark on the back. These bad scans are easily identified and removed by showing scan thumbnails, but I wish the software could handle this better. PDF from printed document and form. The results were good, but not perfect as is usual with OCR. The F-680W is fast, quiet and delivers high quality results. If it fits your budget, it deserves your attention. To get the most out of it and avoid frustration, I recommend watching short Epson videos on Youtube about the scanner. Updated May 10, 2019. I've been scanning quite a bit of documents lately and got very good results. This required disassembling the spiral-bound three-ring manuals and scanning them into searchable PDFs. The fact that scanners process both sides at the same time (and can even discard blank pages from one side) and the high scanning speed make working with such guides fast. Recognition (OCR) is behind it, so you can select and copy and paste text or perform a search. It's very rare, that OCR software misinterprets a character. In addition to the option to remove blank pages, the program also has a feature to remove binding holes from the scanned image for a cleaner look, but this seems hit and miss - it worked very well for some documents, getting rid of them entirely while it was inconsistent in others, remaining behind a hole or two from a triple ring binder, or dozens on some spiral-bound pages. Document scanning is very good at handling jams when they occur. I was having trouble with instructions on a spiral I hadn't read and the sides stuck together where the holes were punched. The scanner jammed trying to pull in stuck pages, but didn't damage any of them. Even after clearing the paper jam, scanning continued with no problems (which includes releasing the latch and tilting the front of the scanner forward, and then ejecting the stuck page). To add more pages after all pages have been scanned, all you have to do is click the "Scan More" button and select single-sided or double-sided scanning, allowing you to mix both types of pages in one scan. ' Scan results cannot be saved in more than one format. Currently, the software will request the output format and after saving the document, the scanned images from which the document was created will be deleted. I'd rather be able to go back to the format selector, to save the document in both PDF and Microsoft Word format, for example. Update 5 August 2019: I've just discovered the 'Text Enhancement' option under 'Advanced Scan Settings' - I saw it but only tried it yesterday. I'm amazed at the difference it makes when scanning documents into searchable PDFs. This has a significant impact on scan time (it takes two to three seconds to scan each page when text enhancement is set to Standard), but the text is crystal clear and consistent, and for me the longer scan time is a small price to pay improving output quality. Which makes it clear that the document was created from a scan, are holes (which can be eliminated with another scan setting option).
