Runs VERY hot (and only 5MB/s transfer rate from MacBookPro)

This is my second Fantom Drive 4TB. First used for video editing with one of the new Mac minis with an M1 chip, because they aren't able to upgrade the hard drive once to something a video editor would find useful. But for the new disc that arrived earlier this week. I'm trying to just copy a 2TB photo library to my 4TB phantom drive. I failed on the first try. I was able to successfully format a macOS Extended (Journaled) drive, but after copying, the drive was visible in Disk Utility but not mounted. So I started again. I erased the drive and reformatted it as MacOS Extended (Journaled) and connected it to my Mac with a USB 3.0 cable. The transfer took several hours and my concern is that the drive is too hot to touch. I held it in my hand for 15 seconds and had to let go - it's literally so hot. According to the Fantom website, it should only be 20 degrees above ambient temperature. I think I have a bad hard drive. I'll throw that away and try to look into another source and see if that makes a difference.
