Review on πŸ”₯ Ultimate Replacement: Swiss Stop Carbon Shimano Brake Pads by Kevin Bigelow

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Mixed bag. Good stopping power but terrible durability. Believe the negative reviews.

I don't usually write negative reviews but this product is great in a negative way. I recently bought a set of unused Bontrager Aeolus XXX 4 carbon clincher rims from a friend and needed brake pads for these rims. These pads were recommended by Trek so I bought them despite the terrible reviews of the terrible durability of these pads. I thought these negative reviews were just an anomaly. But after only 2 rides totaling 50 miles with some hilly descents the pads are noticeably worn by about a third. Even after I tried not to brake so often to protect the pads. So I'm guessing the pads will last about 300 miles if I'm careful, maybe 500 miles max if I'm lucky. It's too expensive to spend on brake pads every few months. My Shimano Ultegra rubber pads for aluminum rims were only a quarter worn after 3000 miles. The problem is that all pads (even from different manufacturers, but maybe all from Swissstop) for carbon discs seem to have terrible durability and are expensive. I briefly tried cork pads but they seemed abrasive and Trek doesn't recommend them for these bikes. Now I'm thinking about just selling carbon clincher rims and either sticking with aluminum rims or buying another bike with disc brakes. Very disappointed!
