This is a very handy yarn storage. It's ceramic heavy enough to be sturdy and stay in place as you pull more yarn, and is glazed smooth so yarn never snags or frays. The top opening is about 4.5 inches in diameter and the bowl is about 4 inches deep. It easily holds a 650 yard top yarn cake. There is plenty of room for a 400 yard ball of socks or finger yarn. This should work well for any weight of yarn where the skein, cake, or skein is about 4" x 4.5" or less. The only feature it doesn't have are holes, through which knitters can stick their needles through the side and into the bowl. I don't see that as a disadvantage at all. In fact, I prefer that because I wouldn't try to stuff my work or needles into a bowl even if there were holes, and holes would be pointless anyway when working with circular needles, big needles, or a crochet hook. . I am very satisfied with this knitting bowl. The price is reasonable, I recommend!
