I used to buy cheap rubberized plastic pillows. They always end up with mold and mildew in the pillow and around the suction cups that no amount of bleach can destroy, and then start to deteriorate in the bathroom — literally falling apart. Not to mention that they just aren't very comfortable: a small pillow and lots of uneven suction cups underneath you. I finally decided it was time to upgrade to a quality rug and I was drawn to the idea of this rug being machine washable. It's made from the same synthetic fibers as those shower sponges, only much thicker and denser. My first impression was that it was a little prickly as a result, but when you relax on it you don't really notice it. What you REALLY notice is that it offers good cushioning and the texture keeps it from slipping and sliding on it. The suction cups are a good size (about 2 inches or so) and are only on the edges so you don't feel like they're poking you. They hold the carpet very well. The pillow is ideal for the head or neck. I'm even tempted to change the position of the mat and see how I like the lumbar pillow. The length of the mat is suitable for most bathtubs. We have a big tub so it's not quite right, but that's okay because so are my feet (I'm only 5ft 4). Haven't tried washing this rug yet and will update my review if there are any mold/mildew issues, but I suspect this is a product that will last much longer than the cheaper versions.
