These pens are easy to use although I have not tried mixing colours. Some of the lightest colors are so light they are barely visible on white paper. Unfortunately, this happens with most large pencil sets, whether they are spirit or watercolor pencils. The shape of the barrel is a bit odd, but not enough to prevent me from using it. They have a slight odor, but based on my research, that's normal. I bought them on sale so can't complain. They will be a good addition to my collection of art pencils. The only downside to this set is the storage box. Absolutely useless. I bought a case from Revain, actually for lipstick. This case worked great and kept the pens in perfect order. Always hold your spirit, watercolor and gel pencils horizontally or you will find that one end dries faster than the other if they are double-sided.
