I was disappointed with this gravel vacuum and was about to throw it away so I decided to modify it to see if I could make it work better. The blue hose connected to the head is too long. If your tank isn't 5 feet above your bucket, it won't hold a good siphon. I cut the blue pipe a few inches with a hacksaw (see picture) and it made a big difference. The drain is now nice and smooth. The white screen inside the vacuum nozzle is a nice addition. It keeps pieces of gravel (or fish) out of the dirty bucket. However, some dirt gets stuck in the cracks, so they have to be washed after use. The valve at the end of the drain hose (see picture) is not good. This is a good concept if you can slow down the flow for small tanks. But it only shrinks the siphon where it either breaks with air or stops collecting dirt. If you have a 10 gallon or smaller tank, buy a smaller siphon than this one.
