I have worked with printers and copiers for over 30 years, 16 of which as an IT Manager. During this time I have learned some lessons that it is always advisable to use genuine branded inks. Factors such as color fastness, viscosity, uniform particle size (for laser printers) and built-in lubrication (for dot matrix printers) contribute to printhead life. And we tested it on printers from different manufacturers. After we built the hull, our buyers dropped the white box products on us. Canon inks are of high quality. But the MX870's ink cartridges are so small that you have to change them constantly. The reason for this is less the replacement cartridges and more the design of the printer itself. Like most inkjet inks, they smudge when exposed to moisture. Some people use hairspray to set the ink after printing, but Canon doesn't support this approach. Aerosol photoresist is available in gloss, satin, and matte finishes from select photo companies. I wish Canon and other inkjet manufacturers produced smudge-free inks of the same quality in some other way.
