About 9 months ago I bought Edifier 1700BTs speakers for my computer and home studio. While they sound great, the system is designed so you can easily add a subwoofer to fill in the low frequencies that the built-in 4-inch woofer can't handle. Once a subwoofer is connected, the speakers will redirect ALL low frequencies. (up to approx. 170 Hz) to the subwoofer, so that the 1700s can concentrate on their strengths, the mids and highs. This made a big difference. Highly recommended as a complement to bookshelf speakers, particularly those like the 1700BT with subwoofer output. NOTE: The subwoofer connects using a mini stereo cable, similar to that commonly found in headphones.
