This was a completely useless purchase for my 6 month old puppy who had just been neutered. She only had it when she was very calm, and when she was very calm she didn't need a donut collar. Her photos with him were taken on day one (still waiting for the anesthetic to wear off). She took acepromazine for 10 days. For the first 2 days she was either too absentminded or just slept well. She snored wearing a donut collar and my husband said she was uncomfortable. So we took it off her while she was sedated. By the 3rd day she was back to her normal violent state and we had to give her a sedative as prescribed but this was only once every 12 hours, the effects started after an hour and lasted about 2-3 hours. So we had to prevent her from reaching the incision site for 8 hours. With that in mind, we bought this donut collar along with a post-surgery recovery suit. She quickly realized that by putting her paw in the donut, she could easily remove it from her head. This is fairly easy for longer-legged dogs (German Shepherd, Doberman Pinscher, etc.), while it may not be possible for breeds like English Bulldogs. So basically we played the ON AND OFF game 50 times between long sticks and other things. This interests her because Kong was stuffed with peanut butter and the marrow was too small/short for her to comfortably hold and chew/lick a donut around her neck. With this collar she could easily penetrate to the end of the telescopic sight. That would be a problem if she wasn't wearing a survival suit. On day 6 I was checking underwear when she took them off in her drawer and put a stop to it by destroying the inflation hole. She came out of her basket with a dead donut in her mouth and somehow killing the donut got her excited so she ran around the house trying to get away from me and shattered her head with the dead donut in her mouth. Now she carries a free satellite dish from the vet. It was part of a surgical sterilization kit and they insisted I take it. You were right. I do not recommend this product for exuberant young puppies with long legs. Yes, the velcro noise is very loud when made directly over her head or near her ears (I'm just guessing), but I've never had to do it except the first time. I never had to take it off her after that because she did it herself. The collar itself didn't scare her because she was heavily sedated when she first saw it and everything on earth probably looked like a donut to her. She could eat and drink with him, but she's the queen of the drooling mouth when she drinks water, and she made the donut wet and slimy. When she reverted to her normal self, she thought it was the best chew toy ever. She followed him stubbornly. She always gives 120% when catching bug robbers. Therefore, it never stayed on her neck. I personally thought it looked comfortable when she fell asleep with it on, but my husband disagreed. She made this weird noise through her nose like she was choking on something. I hope she doesn't need surgery again soon but I won't be buying this product for her or our other dog as it didn't help. Serve your purpose this time.
