In November 2011 our dog tore his anterior cruciate ligament and underwent surgery. He recovered fairly well, but his leg becomes slightly numb after lying down. Different combinations of pillows and blankets helped, but not completely. Price was an important factor when choosing this bed, but the most important thing was dog comfort as well as durability. After all, the review should have convinced me that my dog would use this bed and provide enough padding to reduce the stiffness in his legs. This is a difficult task. After reading many reviews, some commented that the outer cover (the velor in the product description) didn't wear well, others felt that the product wasn't really waterproof or that the bed was flat out of the box, and one review commented that the product had a specific chemical smell. At some point you just have to take a risk and hope for the best. Revain's return policy makes it easy to change your mind, but at the end of the day you need a bed for your dog that offers a comfortable place to rest and relieves or eliminates stiffness. Many other reviewers were very pleased, and some described the bed support as exactly how I was willing to try it. I took the plunge and shared my findings here. I hope this review helps you. Case. Firstly, the outer cover is washable and feels very comfortable, soft and durable at the same time. Since dogs are naturally fluffy and greasy, we use a different pillow as a base and wash it as needed. This will protect the outer coating so we will see much less wear on the coating. The bag is zipped and seems easy enough to remove. Waterproof: As mentioned we use a separate cover as a pad and luckily our dog hasn't had any incontinence issues. I can tell that it wears on the bedspread quite regularly and hasn't had to be washed yet and shows no signs of wear even after a few months. Flat: The bed comes flat out of the box and packed in a zippered bag. Just open the bag and take out the bed, it will expand to full size within an hour. Our bed opened completely without any action on our part to correct the shape of the bed or change the position of the bed in the bedspread. It just worked. This saves a lot on shipping costs. Smell: We didn't notice any smell, even fresh out of the box. Our dog put his old bedding on top and immediately lay down on the new bed. More on that later. Thickness: This bed is strong but not rigid, it is approximately 4 inches thick as stated in the product description. When our dog lies down on the bed, there is no noticeable collapse, no middle sagging. The bed supports him. without squeezing it too hard *I* sat with him on this bed and the bed just springs back, no lag, no dents. Dog: Our dog, Raisin, 60 pounds and 9 years old. We bought this large pillow to give him enough space to stretch out. He loves the bed. Today he no longer has numbness in his legs after resting and his quality of life has improved using this bed. But if anyone on the edge would like a video of Raisin using the bed let me know and I'll be happy to make and post it so it can help you decide. == UPDATE: DEC 23. 2013 == Durability: This pillow is still in use! Not a single problem. Raisin sleeps and rests on it every day. There was no noticeable wear. It still has the original color. or, form and texture. There is no sagging anywhere, even in corners or places that are frequently walked on. Low Maintenance: At the moment we just needed a light mopping (paw prints) and that's it. Using a separate top pad will significantly affect how often the outer cover is washed. The top layer protects the mattress from body oil and other normal kicks. If you follow this advice, after bathing your dog, place regular bath towels on the top pad for about an hour to prevent it from getting wet. Raisins don't like wet top padding. == UPDATE: AUGUST 18, 2015 == Izyum still uses it as their base. The outer cover of the pad is still in very good condition, still has pile, good color. It is washed as needed. I attribute good condition to our top barrier, usually a thick bath towel that is changed once or twice a week. The foam core still holds its shape, still bounces no matter who lays on it (me) or bounces off it (our 60-pound bulldog, Tonka). Raisins use it as a base and play with their chew toys while lying on the mat. At 12, the little man's arthritis made his legs a little stiffer and his legs a little slower. Nevertheless, he walks through the neighborhood every day (sometimes twice). I think it's important to mention this: he's resting like old dogs on the mat and ready to have fun when I get home. When I go to work I block sofas and other furniture he might use as he also has 2 degenerated vertebrae and climbing or jumping should be avoided. As I leave, I look back. He usually circles around the square and makes himself comfortable. Dogs usually circle at least 3 times. It rests comfortably on probably the best $40 we've spent on one of our dogs. == UPDATE: MARCH 02, 2016 == I'm pleasantly surprised that the pillow has lasted so long. After 12-16 hours a day. With use, the foam core eventually became too soft for further use. I regularly test it for firmness and noticed that the resistance in the middle part of the lining hardly allows my foot to stick out of the ground. For about $40 this pillow lasted 3.5 years and became a very comfortable place for Raisins to rest/sleep. . The price is amazing. We have 3 dogs. Raisins are the oldest. Our young dogs love litter but don't need it. So we gave them this! They love it.==SECOND PURCHASE 02 MARCH 2016==Unfortunately, this second purchase must also be taken into account along with the first. This is the 2nd purchase, not inflated. Not even close. Even after 36 hours. *Very difficult* to return a ship, even with a partially inflated seal. I called seller support during business hours # for advice. The call went to an answering machine ("Please leave a message"). Truth? boo! We sent this rug back and bought another one. It inflates in 30 seconds, costs less per square foot and works just like our first pillow :) warm, - Dean Schultz.
