So my local cable company finally got hold of 20th-century equipment and started offering speeds in excess of 100 Mbps. This poses a problem for many users with older modems and routers, as the top speed is typically 100Mbps and doesn't get any faster. I ended up in that category, so I decided to pay extra for a gigabit ethernet router to get the nice 400Mbps speeds I was promised. I know my internal router already promises 10/100/1000 speeds, but I bought this network interface card (NIC) because I'm getting maybe a quarter of the advertised speed with a wired ethernet. Sure, the technology can take out a Samsung Galaxy and deliver great wireless speeds, but why doesn't my wired speed offer those connections? I've been building computers for years so installation is easy but even if you need a Philips screwdriver and some common sense to install this board. All you have to do is turn off the computer, remove the slot cover, insert the network card into the appropriate slot, tighten the screw, close the computer case, and you're done! Unfortunately, I'm still getting speeds just under 100Mbps, not unlike the nick I already have. I've made sure the modem and router support gigabit ethernet, I've made sure I'm using CAT 5e cables, and I've even adjusted the speeds in the driver settings to support gigabit. But nothing works. I couldn't be more confused. I took off a star because the NIC seemed to be struggling with download speeds compared to my internal NIC. See realtek.com.tw for drivers. It supports gigabit networks and mine is based on the 8168 chipset. I hope you have better luck than me. Edit: After months of hair pulling and tech support calls, I finally figured out that the cable company cables were the problem. I had to replace the modem cable and router cable with my own Category 5e cables to get over 100Mbps. A cable company that cannot supply good cables. None of that is specific to this NIC, and I'm sure it will work fine at speeds over 100Mbps if you use decent cables.
