Review on πŸ“ iGaging Precision Fractional Decimal Combination Caliper by Dan Reggae

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Sturdy but virtually impossible to open housing

I am rating this caliper 3 stars to draw attention to the plastic housing that the caliper is housed in. Otherwise I would have given 5 stars. While the case is solid, the latches that lock the lid in place are a major disappointment, especially before opening it for the first time. Only the middle latch is marked with a down arrow. Actually there is no slider. This is to click here. But wait, there are two other unmarked spots with latches, one on the bottom of the case and the other on the top of the case that needs to be pushed in. All three must be pressed at the same time; only strong with two hands! (Not to mention that since the body is strong, it's hard to dent.) I originally started out buying a $110 Starrett caliper until I read reviews that this legendary company made this kind sourced from caliper from China. Given this information, it was an easy decision to buy this highly regarded caliper, also made in China, from iGaging at a third of the price. It's just such a shame that the company made such a stupid mistake by delivering such a poorly made case. I can just cut off the two outer tabs to make it better. (I've marked the tab locations with yellow dots in the attached photo.)

Pros
  • Fine adjustment wheel
Cons
  • Socket required
