Review on APC NET9RMBLK - 9-Outlet Rackmount Surge πŸ”Œ Protector with 1700 Joules and 120V Surge Protection by Fernando Beck

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Big problem! Same model number, reduced equipment, different layout!

I bought this to replace APC's previous white NET9RM. The old one would have gotten 5 stars for protecting a $15,000 rack of professional gear from a faulty alternator that was wired and calibrated incorrectly and putting out too much voltage. My old NET9RM smoked in and out badly, but ALL my hardware survived. Few other surge protectors can provide this level of protection. BUT when I ordered a new unit with the same model number (except for BLK which stands for black) and the exact same case etc. I noticed that the TVSS surge protection ratings on the back are significantly inferior to the old ones. In the OLD version of the device there was a clamping voltage (the lower the better) 330V for all three LN, LG, NG. The NEW unit is 400/500/500V respectively. This way when the surge occurs you still have 500 volts going through your 120 volt gear. Curiously, I opened both the new and old blocks. Inside they looked the same, except each block had two completely different circuit boards. Same shape and dimensions but completely different layout and components. Cluster and MOV chokes are less reliable on the new model. APC should have provided a new model number instead of selling a significantly inferior device and passing it off as the same model.

Pros
  • Electronics
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for the elderly
