Review on Fostex T50RP MK3 Semi-Open 🎧 Studio Headphones, Designed for Professional Use by Haruto Asahi ᠌

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Reliable purchase, guaranteed to be a good purchase.

Headphones require not very complex, global modernization. The finalization of the headphones consists in a complete reworking of the magnetic system and complete damping. In my case, the case of the magnetic system was redesigned, in which there are 5 magnets on 2 sides. In stock, there are 6 magnets, 3 magnets on both sides. I removed the standard dampers, the drivers themselves and the cups of the case, pasted over with a rather dense felt. The sound, colossally strong, changes for the better! HiFiMAN HE400se, merge them in all respects without a chance. I can’t even believe that such a small and thick membrane can produce such a level of sound. If you like the sound of the stock Fostex T50RP, then after the mod, you will be crazy about them! If it is very difficult for you to remake the magnetic system, then it will be enough to at least squander the gratings on which the magnets stand. Important! It must be bored on both sides so that the membrane is as open as possible. Definitely boring on both sides! I saw how some people read about the modification of Fostex, and do everything wrong. They think it's enough to squander the driver on the one hand. In general, driver bore and damping are the bare minimum to unleash the potential of these headphones by 60-70% approximately. Modified Fostex T50RP, this is a real find for a metal worker)) Drums hit right on the ears! Ruthlessly, powerfully, deeply. Bass level, quietly adjustable damping. Lows do not clog the midrange and treble. Stock Fostex, differ from other headphones, very good midrange. After the mod, the mids become even fatter, more detailed, with even greater and unrealistic drive! With HF, everything is absolutely fine, the brain is not sawn, they are not mixed into porridge, as HiFiMAN do on metal. I had HiFiMAN HE400se and Fostex T50RP, there is something to compare. After the global modification of the second, HiFiMAN flew to the secondary without hesitation, since the modified T50RP, this is another level. The source from which the headphones are powered, the author's tube and hybrid VCL, ak4490 DAC.

Pros
  • Quite a lot of potential for different modifications
Cons
  • The sound of stock, for an amateur
