Recently, I made the mistake of purchasing a pair of Chinese headphones that were in the same price range as the ones I returned. The location of the headphones and the active mode are not sufficiently indicated visually or aurally. It's not entirely clear how it works or why this feature is required from the available instructions, which are only available in English. A feature to "hear the environment," for instance, renders the music nearly inaudible while simultaneously rendering ambient sounds audible as if using vacuum headphones. Since I was expecting the microphone to pick up background noise, I was disappointed. You'll have to use your phone's volume controls if you want to adjust the volume. It's preferable to remove it if you need to listen to your surroundings, but calls will be picked up if you don't put them in a box. Strange things happen when using the microphone; sometimes it seems like they can clearly hear me, and other times it seems like they are very far away. I'm sure it's just a matter of getting used to it and figuring it out, but after using them for about a month, I've decided I prefer alternative headphones with more intuitive interfaces and predictable outcomes.
