I felt compelled to write this review after using this air filter for a while. Firstly we bought this filter for the smoker in the house and yes it really helps remove the smell of smoke from the house when needed. However, as with some reviews, I wanted to share our experiences on how we keep this air filter running. You should definitely clean the permanent filter ONCE a week if you intend to use it specifically to remove cigarette smoke. The entire filter will be covered in sticky smoke residue and that's what we learned from cleaning after about 6 months - Wear a mask and gloves when cleaning the filter. I've learned from experience that the filter smells like cigarette smoke and unless you smoke you probably don't want to inhale those fumes. So wear a mask! And the same goes for gloves. The residue is sticky and not only that, cigarettes are full of chemicals and carcinogens. Who wants it on their hands? - It took me a while to figure it out, but the easiest and quickest way to clean the filter is to use dish soap. We use Dawn and it works wonders. I put a few drops of Dawn on the filter and the rest of the smoke literally slides off. I also use a SOFT (this is important) toothbrush and gently brush away the residue. Make sure the toothbrush is soft so as not to damage the filter. Finally, make sure the filter is completely dry before putting it back in place. That's all! It's literally that simple. Thanks to this, our filter works like new and we are very satisfied with customers! So if you live with a smoker and are hesitant to buy this based on other reviews, I'm telling you right now it works, but you have to be willing to take about 15 minutes of your time to clean the filter once a week so that it dies air cleans!
