I bought these shoes for running. I typically run 1-6 miles several times a week. Actually this is my second pair. I bought my first pair after analyzing my steps at a running store. My feet pronate (roll inward) and they offer support with a wider base for stability. Although I prefer trail running, I usually run a few miles down the road. I'm in my 40's and appreciate the cushioning they offer. I had no problem wearing these shoes on dirt trails with tree roots and hills. If you're looking for a lightweight, unstructured shoe, this is NOT for you. Also, the wider base is not suitable for rock climbing. I know this might not be relevant to most people, but I still thought it was worth mentioning (it cost me the right to brag about a family vacation because I couldn't keep my toe decent!). My first pair is now my "walk". Sneakers. I actually think the stability and cushioning are overkill for leisurely walking and I would have preferred something smoother and more nimble, but that's just my personal preference. After about a year of this running style, my knees, feet, and spine are still happy and functioning, so this is probably the best proof I could come up with!
