Our 18 month old likes to wear it at home and even more outside. I've used a tip on it and it works great with no signs of wear or tear even after being dropped a few times; and I was able to stop him from falling completely forward! You should still keep an eye on them, and that's no reason to ignore them to talk to someone or do anything else. The strap can wrap around their necks when they turn, so watch out! The strap used to hang the backpack has come loose on one side, so it's not that good there, and there are questions about the integrity of the rest of the backpack.
