My kitten recently had a strange cough/sneeze that was very severe. She sneezed with a lot of thick mucus and because of the mucus she had trouble eating - she vomited. They took her to the vet and they found out she had some sort of virus (probably feline herpes virus or something) because that cough/sneeze/phlegm kept coming back when she stopped taking antibiotics. But I ended up adding this lysine to her daily diet - adding it to her wet food twice a day, and IMMEDIATELY her symptoms subsided. We were about to start our 3 month course of antibiotics when we started - and the next day I called the vet to stop her as her symptoms had almost completely disappeared. Within a week, the symptoms disappeared completely. :) Just watch your dosage as too much can cause diarrhea. We have done this too.
