Review on Kodak P811BK Personal Negative Scanner by Daniel Fung

Revainrating 4 out of 5

So far, so good.

I bought this scanner because my parents have over 50 photo albums in their basement (they and my grandparents). My brother and I thought it would be nice to scan the photos. I bought this scanner because the reviews were pretty good. I started scanning all the photos I had at home (400) and it worked. Then I started my parents' albums, starting the year I was born. After 3 albums (total more than 1000 photos on the scanner) I noticed that there were white lines on some photos. I was very angry. I kept cleaning and calibrating it (although I did it regularly which caused this problem, I did it a few times in a row when I noticed the problem). The lines in the photos have gotten a little better, but not completely gone. I used some free photo editing software I found online and corrected the white line areas. I was furious because I thought I had at least 3,000 more photos to scan and I didn't want to retouch them all. I went to the 4th album and suddenly the white bars disappeared. Since then I've scanned 200 photos and they're all fine. I clean and calibrate the scanner regularly and keep my fingers crossed that it keeps running until we've scanned all the photos (which will probably be a year). Overall I'm glad I bought it. It's quick and easy to use. I put it on the counter (with a bin underneath for my photos) and a stack of photos next to it. The children and I look at the picture as we pass. A few photos will be scanned during the evening. The memory card fits a lot of photos (I don't even think I filled it 1/3 full). I threw away my photos and now I have 5 lighter albums. I hope I can look through my parents' leftover albums so we can have digital copies of our wonderful memories.

Pros
  • Best in its niche
Cons
  • Expensive insurance
