My carpet was cleaned by a carpet cleaner and they used something similar on a drill to remove chewing gum. I bought this and tried it. It requires a lot of skill, and even if you're careful, the dingy carpet it leaves behind can be uglier than leaving gum, but for our purpose it works. Just don't overdo it and use a brush to clean up the bob and scissors to trim the loose strands. If you overdo it, you can easily ruin the carpet.
