This product was a must for me after getting my long arm machine. Great tension is important for longarm. The coil tension needs to be adjusted and it's not entirely clear what that adjustment should be, but there are some really good YouTube videos to learn all about it. There's a new one, a digital one, that not only helps with bobbin thread tension, but upper thread tension as well. It's double the price and I didn't feel like it should be a must have, but this winder is an absolute must for me. You can make your own adjustments with the spool while it is on it. It is very easy to use
