As seen in the photo, it is used to bypass the drinking water filter kit . As others have noted, the three large packing nuts should be tightened prior to use. They were a bit stiff at first, but after putting them in a vise and turning the valve a lot, they work fine now. Walked over the dishwater to clean the machine oil before use as it is on the main drinking water line leading into the house. The dishwasher removed the big "MADE IN CHINA" lettering on the handles - dammit. Would buy again.
