I don't use it as a keychain. I've always hated when my dog's leash gets stuck under his leg and I have to bend all the way down, my 6ft 7in long down and untangle. I added this to his standard leash. I don't like fully retractable leashes for large/powerful dogs. My brother was jogging and walking past a German shepherd - revealing previous violations - and boom, her retractable leash flew out and she couldn't catch her and the German shepherd said a little runner appeared. They are suitable for small dogs. It's perfect. I use a leash that attaches to my waist. The latter breaks down and prevents overuse. I feel 100% safe with this setup. This Kevlar cable seems very durable. It is used 2 hours a day.
