None of the 8 modes has a timer. This means you have to go up and down steps or stairs every time you want to turn the topper light on or off. I won't do it twice a day! Flashlights are powered by 3 AA batteries which create significant weight. There's a spot where you can add a decorative hook to the battery case so it can be hung from a branch, but it's very difficult to hide it high up in a tree with a cord so short an unlit topper, you will love. If you plan to use lanterns, you will likely find them a nuisance unless you leave your tree lanterns on all day, every day for the entire season or you don't have a short Christmas tree.
