Wumby's Lobby Changesuit

Even though this silly thing makes our little one look a bit like Uncle Fester, he seems to like it a lot. Does he magically sleep longer? No, but he slept best in the Wumby, which could be due to either the Wumby itself or a magical algorithm that determines babies' sleep patterns throughout the night. But the best thing is that he can't escape - at least not yet. I still expect him to pierce his throat with the Hulk's power, but so far the Wumby has restrained his wayward limbs and allowed him to grab his hands, which he so desperately desires. from day one. It might have been a futile struggle to keep him wrapped since he himself had come out of the womb a full month premature, but we persevered. Each swaddle blanket was itself a categorical no-go, even if it weighed less than two kilos. Of course some sort of Velcro swaddle would have helped but we were dismayed to find it was too small for her. By chance I stumbled across the Summer Infant SwaddlePod, which is essentially the same as a Wumby but tiny and made for small newborns. The SwaddlePod retained tiny baby hands so it quickly became our favorite and everyone was happy. Our little one enjoyed putting his hands together in the SwaddlePod and slept with his hands to his face rather than his sides. For a while the SwaddlePod worked great and everyone loved it, but after a few weeks of hard work, he managed to crank out the necks of all his SwaddlePods and rip his arm off. Since he seemed to like to sleep with his arm outstretched, we were fine with that at first, but as this success quickly led to him outgrowing the SwaddlePods, we sadly let them go. Then we tried Summer Infant SwaddleMe. It felt like a SwaddlePod and straitjacket love child, and it kept our stubborn diaper wrapped, so we liked it at first. However, after a while the combination of strengthening the baby and releasing the velcro resulted in one or more hands coming out regularly and at this point he found that he could put his hands in his mouth and suckle loudly, waking us up and scare the cat. . It doesn't fit at all. Since it was on the verge of outgrowing the small SwaddleMe size, we naively bought a larger size, thinking that more clearance and a new Velcro would fix the problem. Oh no, the new, larger version wasn't even a problem - he put his hand out in a matter of seconds, and by that point he'd learned to laugh, and it soon became a game for him to break free. We tried not to swaddle which resulted in him being very awake half the night before giving up - his startle reflex was still strong enough that some form of swaddling would seriously help him get to sleep. Tried the Halo SwaddleSack and spent half the night grumbling to himself as he struggled to get free and ended up wrapping the stuff around his head instead of ripping his arm off. The same happened with the Summer Infant WrapSack. Tried the Miracle Blanket and he HATED it - it didn't last long. Briefly considered making a solution with duct tape (just kidding). Finally realizing we had a few bucks left that we hadn't already spent on baby sleep products, we decided to give Woombie a try. while it works fine. It's like the SwaddlePod we loved so much but just the right size for a bigger kid. I'm sure eventually he'll stretch his neck enough to stretch his arm, but we've been using this thing for a few weeks now and the neck doesn't seem to stretch at all, so it's probably built some sort of neck stretch. Immunity. Or he's content to be able to put his hands together and/or put them in his mouth (thanks to the cloth, which thankfully muffles the uncomfortably loud sucking that would otherwise startle the cat). In any case, he hasn't gotten out of this one yet and is sleeping well in it, so we'll count this as a win. To sum it up, from the perspective of a die-hard diaper parent, if this is what your child sounds like and you haven't tried Wumby yet, you might want to try it. It's not a traditional swaddle, so at least it saves your baby from struggling all night and everyone can rest. UPDATE: Two months later, we still love Wumby. There is no other way out than through the neck, and despite my initial skepticism, it took more than two months before he managed to stretch his neck enough to yank his arm out. Washing and drying on hot restored it to its normal size, but it stretched again in just a couple of nights. So we're now buying our second Wumby, one with convertible handholes so we can use it when we're changing out of the diaper. He is now 5 months old so our diaper days are certainly numbered but he sleeps so well in the Wumby that we will keep him in it for as long as possible. This was one of the best baby purchases we've made. And we bought tons of baby stuff!
