No gap is a good gap

I first used this in my Oklahoma Joe Highland smoking room. The gasket set is ideal (with little clearance) for both the smoke box and the firebox. The sealant is suitable for use both around the chimney and outside the firebox. Simple and easy to use if you've ever caulked a window or tub. It's messy but works great. Make sure your silicone bead is big enough to flatten with your finger after squeezing it out of the tube. If the bead (i.e. what you cut into the nozzle) is too small, it can get caught in the seam between the smokebox and firebox. This can be a relatively large gap. When this happens you can't smooth it out with your finger and the gap will never seal properly. Properly close the gap by making the slot in the nozzle big enough to extrude a good sized bead. TIP: The gasket itself should be pressed firmly against each strip on the four edges of the lip of the smokehouse cover. This means if you are installing four weatherstripping strips (top, bottom and both sides), make sure each piece is long enough to fit snugly against the other strips. If you have a gap anywhere on the four sides (especially in the corners), smoke will come out. It seems like common sense, but "close enough" won't be close enough if your smoke is seeping out of the gap you left in the strip. If you have a small gap, fill it with silicone sealant and let it dry before closing the lid. Happy smoking!
